After years of experiencing Disney from different perspectives, including working with Disney Destinations, inspecting all of Disney World’s Good Neighbor Hotels, years of selling Disney Tickets, sailing with Disney Cruise Line over 10 times, and helping families create vacations they will love, we have learned one important lesson: The best Disney vacation is not always the biggest or most expensive one. It is the one that fits your family.

Step 1: Choose the Right Disney Destination for Your Family

One of the first decisions in Disney trip planning is deciding where you actually want to go.

This sounds simple, but Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort, and Disney Cruise Line are completely different vacation experiences.

There is no single “best” Disney destination. The right choice depends on your vacation time, budget, travel style, and what your family wants most from the experience.

Step 2: Decide When to Plan Your Disney Vacation

One of the biggest questions we hear during Disney trip planning is:

“When should I start planning?” … the answer depends on your family, your travel dates, and how flexible you can be.

Some families decide they want to visit Disney and start planning a few weeks before they arrive. And yes, that can work. A last-minute Disney vacation can still be amazing.

For many families, the resort becomes part of the vacation experience.

One of the biggest decisions in Disney trip planning is whether to stay:

• On Disney property
• Off Disney property

Both options can create an incredible vacation. The right choice depends on your family, your budget, and what matters most to you.

Step 4: Create a Realistic Disney Vacation Budget

Let’s talk about one of the biggest questions families have:

“How much does a Disney vacation actually cost?”

The answer? It depends. And it is NOT cheap. 20 years ago, I was told that each family spends 10k or more but 20 years later, that cost can easily double if you’re going at Disney hard.

A family staying at a Value Resort, eating quick-service meals, and visiting for four days will have a very different budget than a family staying at a Deluxe Resort, booking character dining, and adding premium experiences.

A realistic Disney vacation budget usually includes:

• Food – $$
• Transportation – $
• Merchandise – $

That incredible amount of choice is also what makes planning challenging. You are not just choosing a theme park.

For families who want a full Disney immersion, Walt Disney World is an incredible option.

Disneyland Resort includes:

• Three official Disneyland Resort hotels

The biggest difference between Disneyland and Walt Disney World is the size. Walt Disney World covers thousands of acres, while Disneyland Resort is much more compact, and surrounded by a city.

That changes the entire vacation experience.

At Disneyland, you can often walk between parks in just minutes (super perk). Many nearby hotels are also within walking distance, making it a great choice for shorter trips.

Disneyland can be an excellent option for families who:

• Only have a few days
• Want a shorter Disney getaway
• Love Disney history
• Prefer walking instead of relying heavily on transportation

But Disneyland has its own planning considerations.

Because it is a local favorite, crowd patterns can sometimes be less predictable. It also has fewer dining options compared to Walt Disney World, although many Disneyland restaurants offer unique experiences you cannot find anywhere else. And if your family speaks Spanish, Disneyland ride spiels are in English and Spanish so this can be nice for your family.

Disney Cruise Line: A Different Kind of Disney Vacation

Disney Cruise Line creates a completely different type of Disney experience.

Instead of planning park days, you are planning:

• Ship selection
• Itinerary
• Stateroom category
• Dining rotation
• Entertainment
• Port adventures
• Special onboard activities

Disney Cruise Line is known for exceptional service, storytelling, entertainment, and family-friendly experiences.

It is also a premium cruise option.

That means the price can be higher than some other cruise lines, but many families feel the experience is worth it because Disney carries its attention to detail throughout the entire ship.

Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa in Hawaii offers a completely different type of Disney vacation. Instead of theme parks and packed schedules, Aulani focuses on relaxation, culture, and creating meaningful family experiences. Located on the island of Oahu, this Disney Resort combines the spirit of Hawaii with Disney’s attention to storytelling, service, and detail.

Disney dining reservations open 60 days before your arrival date, with new reservation availability typically opening around 6:00 AM Eastern Time. A meal at a themed restaurant is not just about the food. It can be about the atmosphere, the storytelling, and the memories created around the table.

But here is the honest truth, not every expensive Disney dining experience is automatically worth it for every family.

Character dining can be a wonderful Disney experience, but it is not the right choice for every family. If meeting characters at your table, taking photos, and enjoying that interaction is not a priority, the higher price may not feel worth it. While some character dining locations offer excellent food, others can be more about the experience than the meal itself. The biggest advantage of staying at a Disney Resort hotel is convenience.

At Walt Disney World, Disney provides transportation options throughout the property, including:

At Disneyland Resort, many nearby Good Neighbor hotels allow you to walk directly to the parks. There is also something special about staying inside the Disney bubble.

From the moment you arrive, you are surrounded by Disney theming, service, and details that continue beyond the theme parks. However, convenience comes at a cost.

Disney Resort hotels are not always the least expensive option, and paying more does not automatically mean it is the best choice for your family.

Disney Resort hotels generally fall into three categories, Value, Moderate and Deluxe.

Value Resorts

Value Resorts are a great choice for families who:

• Spend most of their time exploring the parks
• Want the Disney Resort experience at a lower price point
• Prefer saving money for dining, souvenirs, or experiences

The rooms are typically smaller, and amenities are more limited compared to higher-tier resorts, even with the family suites at Disney’s Art of Animation.

However, many families love them because they provide an affordable way to stay immersed in Disney.

Moderate Resorts

Moderate Resorts offer a balance between price and amenities.

They are a great option for families who want:

• Larger resort grounds
• More recreation options
• More relaxed environments
• Additional dining choices

These resorts can feel like a vacation within a vacation.

Deluxe Resorts

Deluxe Resorts offer some of Disney’s most immersive experiences.

• Convenient transportation options

For some families, staying at a Deluxe Resort is part of the dream. For others, the additional cost may not make sense. The “best” Disney Resort is not always the most expensive one.

A Disney World Deluxe Resort may be incredible, but if your family plans to spend every waking moment in the parks, you may not take full advantage of those added amenities. So…. choosing the right resort is about matching the experience to how you vacation.

Staying Off Property: Disney Good Neighbor Hotels

One of the biggest misconceptions in Disney trip planning is that staying off property means having a lesser vacation. That simply is not true. Disney Good Neighbor Hotels can be an excellent option for families who want convenience and value.

These hotels are selected based on Disney’s standards and are recognized as quality options near the parks. Plus, the designation is not simply handed out.

Hotels must meet specific expectations, and they can lose that designation if they do not maintain those standards.

During my time working with Disney Destinations, I had the opportunity to participate in hotel inspections, and seeing the level of detail Disney evaluates gave me a greater appreciation for the program.

For families looking to save money while still staying in a quality hotel, a Disney Good Neighbor Hotel can be a fantastic choice.

Benefits may include:

• More affordable pricing
• Additional room space
• Convenient locations

Sometimes spending less on your hotel allows you to spend more on the experiences your family will remember.

The Most Important Disney Budget Tip

Decide what matters most before you arrive. Ask yourself:

Would your family rather:

• Spend money on days at the parks rather than a nicer room?
• Get a nicer room and experience Disney’s top notch hospitality with a splash of 5 or 6 hours in the park?
• Eat at more on the go or eat at table-service restaurants?
• Sleep in after walking 20k steps the day prior or get to the park as soon as it opens?
