Disney Cruise Line Christmas Cruise: What to Know Before You Go

If spending the holidays at sea sounds like your kind of Christmas, a Disney Cruise Line Christmas cruise might be just the ticket! Disney adds a festive twist to its already fantastic cruise experience with sparkling decorations, holiday entertainment, and seasonal surprises throughout the ship.

Known as Very Merrytime Cruises, these holiday sailings bring plenty of Christmas cheer along for the voyage. I’ve sailed on two myself, and if you love Disney Cruise Line and the holiday season, they’re such a fun way to celebrate! If sailing sailing the holidays, I wanted to put together a little resource for anyone planning a Disney cruise at Christmas.

Grab a cup of hot coco and let’s dive in on what to know before you set sail…

Christmas Decorations Aboard Disney Cruise Line

One of the first things you’ll notice aboard a Disney Christmas cruise is the décor! The ships get dressed up for the season with Christmas trees, sparkling lights, garlands, and festive details throughout the public spaces. Depending on your ship and sailing, you may even find an elaborate gingerbread display. Consider it another excuse to grab your camera and take a little stroll around the ship!

My advice? Don’t rush past the decorations on your way to the next activity. Take your time, explore the ship, and enjoy all those little holiday details. You’ll find plenty of picture-perfect spots along the way.

And if your family loves a good Christmas photo, pack those matching pajamas or festive outfits! The holiday decorations make such a fun backdrop for pictures you’ll want to keep long after the cruise is over.

Holiday Characters and Special Experiences

Mickey and Minnie in their holiday best? Yes, please! but be prepared to wait in line.

One of the best parts of a Very Merrytime Cruise is seeing familiar Disney friends dressed for the season. Santa Claus may also make an appearance, giving families a chance to share their Christmas wishes and snap a classic holiday photo at sea.

Two signature experiences to look for are Mickey & Minnie’s Merrytime Tree Lighting and Mickey & Minnie’s Holiday Party. These festive celebrations bring Disney characters, music, and plenty of Christmas cheer to your sailing.

If there’s a particular character or holiday experience your family doesn’t want to miss, check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app early in your cruise. Popular appearances can draw a crowd, so a little planning can go a long way!

Remember that character appearances and activities vary by ship and sailing, so your onboard schedule is the best place to find the details for your particular cruise.

Holiday Activities, Entertainment, and Shopping

The Christmas fun doesn’t stop at the decorations! Depending on your sailing, you may find holiday-themed crafts, seasonal entertainment, and other activities that bring a little extra Christmas spirit to your vacation.

Of course, you’ll still have all the familiar parts of a Disney cruise to enjoy, from onboard entertainment and dining to pool time and exploring the ship. The holiday offerings are simply an extra sprinkle of seasonal fun!

Keep an eye out for holiday merchandise, too. Disney Cruise Line often offers super cute seasonal merch that make fun keepsakes or gifts for the Disney fans waiting for you back home. See something you love? It’s worth checking it out while it’s available rather than assuming it’ll still be there later.

Your Navigator app will help you keep track of what’s happening during your sailing. You won’t necessarily find the same activities on every ship, so check your schedule and make room for the experiences that sound most fun to you.

What Should You Pack for a Disney Christmas Cruise?

This is the super fun part! You don’t need to pack your entire Christmas closet, but a few festive extras can make your cruise even more fun!

Here are a few things to consider bringing along:

  • Matching Christmas pajamas: Perfect for family photos and a little holiday spirit. Yes, yes and yes!
  • Festive shirts and accessories: An easy way to get into the Christmas mood without overpacking.
  • Coordinated family outfits: Great for pictures in front of the ship’s Christmas tree.
  • Your camera or phone: You’ll want it handy for those holiday decorations and character encounters.

And here’s something fun to keep in mind: if your itinerary includes Disney Castaway Cay or Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, you may get to enjoy seasonal touches in a tropical setting. Christmas palm trees? That’s a holiday photo opportunity I can get behind!

Most importantly, leave yourself some room to enjoy the moment. You don’t need to plan every outfit or coordinate every picture to make wonderful memories.

A Few Tips Before Your Very Merrytime Cruise

A little preparation can help you get the most out of your holiday sailing.

  • Check the Navigator app. Look for character appearances, holiday entertainment, and seasonal activities so you can prioritize your must-dos.
  • Take photos early and often. Don’t wait until the last day to find your favorite Christmas tree or decoration. You’ll have more opportunities to enjoy the ship’s festive atmosphere throughout your sailing. But remember, if you are surprised by the cost of photographer photos, check out tip #2 on our list of Disney Cruise Line mistakes to avoid!
  • Leave room for surprises. From unexpected character encounters to seasonal treats and souvenirs, some of the most memorable moments may be the ones you didn’t plan.
  • Know that every sailing is different. Your ship, itinerary, and travel dates can affect which experiences are offered. Check the details for your specific cruise rather than assuming every sailing will be identical.

You don’t need a minute-by-minute Christmas game plan. A little preparation, a dash of holiday spirit, and some flexibility are a pretty great combination!

Is a Disney Christmas Cruise Worth It?

Having sailed on two Very Merrytime Cruises, I’d absolutely recommend considering one if you love Disney and enjoy celebrating the holidays. There’s something special about stepping aboard a ship that’s already dressed for Christmas. You get the decorations, seasonal entertainment, and festive character experiences alongside everything you love about a Disney cruise.

Holiday sailings are popular, and pricing and availability can vary by date and itinerary. If you’re dreaming of a Christmas cruise, it’s worth exploring your options early to find a sailing that works for your family and budget.

Let’s Dive In Even More

And that brings me to a bigger question: Is Disney Cruise Line the right fit for you and your family? That’s something I’m always happy to help you figure out! Disney Cruise Line offers an incredible experience for families, from the storytelling and entertainment to the attention to detail throughout the ships. And while the price tag can be higher than some other cruise lines, I personally believe the experience can be well worth it for the right family.

But every family is different, and I want you to feel confident that you’re choosing the vacation that makes the most sense for you. If you’re curious about sailing with Disney but aren’t sure where to start, reach out!

We can talk through your expectations, budget, and what matters most to your family to see whether a Disney cruise is the right fit. No guesswork, no pressure, just honest advice from someone who’s been there!

Here’s my honest take: a Disney Christmas cruise isn’t necessarily for everyone, and that’s okay! If your idea of a perfect December getaway involves escaping winter for warm Caribbean sunshine, you might prefer a regular sailing.

But if you love Disney Cruise Line, appreciate the incredible attention Disney gives to its holiday decorations, and want to experience something a little different, a Very Merrytime Cruise could be right up your alley. I’ve sailed on two myself, and one thing I appreciate about celebrating Christmas at sea is that you can spread out the festivities instead of trying to squeeze everything into a few hours.

Think about Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Walt Disney World, where there’s so much to see and do in a limited amount of time. For families with little ones who might be ready for bed before the party is over, that can be a lot!

On a cruise, you have more opportunities to enjoy the holiday atmosphere throughout your sailing, at a pace that works for your family. Now, let’s talk timing and budget: holiday sailings can come with higher prices, and popular dates and staterooms can book up well in advance. If a 2027 Christmas cruise is on your wish list, start exploring your options early.

My philosophy is simple: I want you to book the vacation that’s right for you, not just the one that sounds cute on paper!
