Hey Dreamers! If you’re curious about the Disney Dining Plan that you always hear about or are simply wondering whether the Disney Dining Plan is worth it, the answer isn’t as simple as yes or no. After years of visiting Walt Disney World, we can confidently say it depends entirely on how your family vacations. For some, it’s one of the best ways to budget a Disney trip. For others, it can leave you feeling like you’re planning your meals around your credits instead of your vacation.
So, let’s break down who should and shouldn’t purchase the Disney Dining Plan. Prefer a visual breakdown? We have that too so stay tuned below.

What Is the Disney Dining Plan?
The Disney Dining Plan is a prepaid meal program that can be added to eligible Walt Disney World vacation packages (sorry Disneyland is not a part of the Disney Meal plan). To purchase the plan, you’ll need to book a Disney Resorts Collection hotel as part of your package.
Depending on the plan you choose, you’ll receive a combination of quick-service meals, table-service meals, snack credits, and a resort refillable mug for every person ages 3 and older. Your meal credits are based on the number of nights in your stay, can be used anytime during your vacation, and roll over from day to day until midnight on checkout day.
Reservations can be made up to 60 days before arrival through the My Disney Experience app, and Disney even lets you filter restaurants that accept the dining plan.
For families who love having everything planned before they arrive, that’s a huge advantage.
What Changed With the Disney Dining Plan in 2027?
Beginning in 2027, Disney updated the names of its dining plans to make the options easier to understand.
The previous plans were:
- Disney Quick-Service Dining Plan
- Disney Dining Plan
The 2027 names are:
- Quick-Service Dining Plan
- Table-Service Dining Plan
- Deluxe Table-Service Dining Plan (new for 2027)
The biggest change is the addition of the Deluxe Table-Service Dining Plan, designed for families who want a more dining-focused vacation with more sit-down meals, character dining, signature dining, and other premium dining experiences.
Who Will Love the Disney Dining Plan?
In our opinion, the dining plan shines brightest for larger families and groups.
Trying to keep track of six or eight people ordering throughout the day can become overwhelming. One person grabs breakfast, another wants popcorn, someone else stops for an ice cream bar, and before long you’re wondering where the food budget went.
With the dining plan, much of that stress disappears because everyone’s meals are already budgeted.
It’s also a great fit if you:
- Love character dining
- Plan several table-service meals
- Want to know your food costs before your vacation
- Prefer having most expenses paid before you arrive
If that sounds like your travel style, the dining plan can provide real value.
With the addition of the Deluxe Table-Service Dining Plan in 2027, if your family truly enjoys Disney dining now have an option designed around experiencing more table-service restaurants (happy dance). If your idea of a perfect Disney trip includes character meals, signature restaurants, and taking time away from the parks to enjoy a great meal, this option may be worth exploring.

Below, you’ll find an updated comparison with the latest 2027 information to help you choose the best option for your family.

Why We Skip the Disney Dining Plan
Our family has never been big eaters at Walt Disney World. Florida heat changes everything.
Some mornings the kids wake up starving and want a big breakfast. Other mornings we’re happy grabbing something light before heading to the parks.
Lunch is usually our biggest meal because it keeps us going through the afternoon. By dinner, we’re often ready for something small or we’d rather snack while watching fireworks.
That flexibility is something we don’t want to lose. When you’re using dining credits, there’s a temptation to think, “We should use this quick-service meal because we already paid for it.” But the good news is you can bank credits and use them up before the end of your trip. More on this in a bit.
We’d rather eat because we’re hungry, not because a credit is waiting to be redeemed.
The Quick-Service Dining Plan Isn’t for Everyone
One comment from a friend really stuck with us. After purchasing the Quick-Service Dining Plan, they joked they had eaten enough Mickey-shaped chicken strips to last a lifetime.
Was the food bad? Not too bad. The problem was they didn’t have a strategy.
Without knowing where the best values are or which restaurants offer more variety, it’s easy to fall into ordering burgers, fries, pizza, and chicken tenders over and over.
The Disney Dining Plan rewards planning. Without one, you may find yourself eating the same meals simply because they’re convenient.
The Hidden Costs People Forget
One of the biggest misconceptions is that everything is included. It isn’t.
Gratuities are generally not included with the Disney Dining Plan, except for a few select experiences. Parties of six or more will automatically have an 18% gratuity added at participating restaurants, and you’ll still pay separately for specialty beverages, souvenirs, and PhotoPass photos offered at some character meals.
It’s also worth thinking about the refillable resort mug. Many families love it. We almost never use it.
We usually carry refillable water bottles into the parks, and while complimentary water is available throughout Walt Disney World, we’d recommend filling bottles at filtered water stations whenever possible. And if it tastes like Florida water, we just go with it. Adding flavored packets does not help that famous Florida water flavor either!
If you’re like us and don’t spend much time at your resort, that refillable mug may not add much value to your vacation.
The Dining Plan Is Only as Good as the Plan Behind It
This is probably our biggest takeaway. The Disney Dining Plan isn’t something we’d recommend automatically. If you’re purchasing it, have a strategy.
Know which restaurants offer the best value. Know where to use snack credits.
Know when a table-service meal is worth redeeming and when paying out of pocket actually makes more sense. That’s where working with an experienced Disney vacation planner can make a huge difference. Instead of hoping the numbers work out, you can plan your meals before your vacation and maximize every credit you purchase.
In 2027, with three different Disney Dining Plan options available, choosing the right plan becomes even more important. The best option depends less on the number of credits you receive and more on how your family actually enjoys Walt Disney World. A family who loves character dining and signature restaurants may value the Deluxe Table-Service Dining Plan, while another family may prefer the flexibility of paying out of pocket.
So…Is the Disney Dining Plan Worth It?
Our answer is: it depends on your vacation style. If you’re traveling with a large family, love Disney restaurants, enjoy character dining, and want your meals prepaid before you arrive, the Disney Dining Plan can absolutely be worth the money.
But if your family shares meals, snacks throughout the day, prefers flexibility, or simply eats lighter in the Florida heat, paying as you go may actually save you money—and make your vacation feel more relaxed.
The Disney Dining Plan isn’t a product we’d recommend to everyone. It’s a tool. For the right family, it’s fantastic. For the wrong family, it can feel restrictive or even way too much.
Choose the option that fits the way your family actually vacations, not the way you think you should vacation.
Always keep in mind that the Disney Dining Plan participating restaurants can literally change at any time. Walt Disney World regularly updates its dining options, and restaurants may be added, removed, or change their participation in the plan. Before your vacation, we recommend checking the most current Disney Dining Plan restaurant offerings to confirm which quick-service and table-service locations are accepting dining credits.
For the most up-to-date information, we recommend checking the official Disney Dining links for current options. The Quick-Service Dining Plan link provides the latest list of quick-service locations accepting dining credits, while the Table-Service Dining Plan link provides the current table-service restaurants available through the Disney Dining Plan. These official resources are the best place to confirm your dining options before your vacation.
OK, Dreamers… that’s our honest take. Disney does an excellent job creating dining experiences worth remembering, but the Dining Plan isn’t one-size-fits-all. If you’re still unsure, compare how your family normally eats with what each plan includes before you book. The goal isn’t to use every credit, it’s to have the best vacation possible. And if you decide the Dining Plan is right for you, having a solid strategy before you arrive can make all the difference.

So Is the Disney Dining Plan Right for Your Family?
Choosing whether or not to add the Disney Dining Plan to your Walt Disney World vacation is a personal decision, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. For some families, having meals and snacks planned ahead creates an easier, more relaxed vacation. For others, the freedom to order what they want, when they want, works much better.
That is where I can help.
As a Disney Vacation Planner with over 30 years of Disney experience and 10 years as a Disney Cast Member, I can help you decide whether the Disney Dining Plan truly fits your family’s vacation style, not just whether it looks like a good deal on paper.
I can help you understand which quick-service locations are worth your dining credits, which table-service restaurants are worth making reservations for, and which snacks are truly must-tries versus ones that may not live up to the hype. I’ve experienced Disney dining throughout the years and know the difference between the restaurants everyone talks about and the ones that are actually worth your time and money.
The Disney Dining Plan may be a great fit for a family that loves trying restaurants, enjoys character dining, or wants the convenience of having meals planned before they arrive. However, it may not make sense for every vacation style.
For example, many Disney Vacation Club members staying in larger accommodations may find that paying for the Dining Plan does not fit their plans. If you are staying in a one-bedroom, two-bedroom, villa, or a larger accommodation like the Copper Creek Cabins, having a full kitchen can completely change the way you vacation. Many families enjoy preparing a big breakfast in their room with eggs, bacon, and coffee before heading to the parks, then choosing when and where they want to dine throughout the day. In those situations, the flexibility of paying out of pocket may be a better option.
Every family vacations differently, and my goal is to help you find what works best for yours.
Beyond dining plans, I stay up to date on Disney dining changes, restaurant updates, refurbishments, and new announcements so you can make informed decisions before your trip. Disney dining is always evolving, and knowing what is currently available can make a big difference when planning your vacation.
My vacation planning services are complimentary from start to finish when you book through us. I can help with resort selection, dining reservations, Lightning Lane strategy, itinerary planning, and all the details in between.
What makes my approach different is the experience behind the advice. You are not just calling a reservation line and receiving general recommendations. You are getting personalized guidance from someone who has spent decades experiencing Disney as a Cast Member, a Disney Vacation Club member, an annual passholder, and a longtime Disney fan.
Because the truth is, not every popular restaurant is the right restaurant for your family. Not every trending snack is worth the stop. And not every Disney strategy works for every vacation style.
My goal is simple: help you spend less time stressing about planning and more time enjoying the vacation you dreamed about.
