Is Disney Vacation Club Worth It?

Hey Dreamers. Today we are diving into our wildly nostalgic, sometimes complicated, absolutely core memory filled 31 year journey with the Disney Vacation Club. And when I say our, I mean my family. I was 11 years old when this all began. Yikes!

You have seen the booths. You have seen the signs. You have probably power walked past them on your way to your next Lightning Lane. And maybe you have wondered quietly… so what is Disney Vacation Club and why is it everywhere?

We are not endorsing Disney or this program in any way. We are simply sharing our lived experience inside the Disney Vacation Club world for more than three decades.

What Is Disney Vacation Club, Really?

So let’s answer it without the brochure language.

The Disney Vacation Club is Disney’s vacation ownership program where families purchase an interest at a specific Disney resort and receive an annual allotment of points (plus, let’s not leave out the monthly dues, more on that later). Those points are then used to book villa style accommodations at Disney resorts and select destinations. Instead of booking nights with cash each trip, you are using points tied to your ownership.

It is not a traditional hotel booking model. It is not a simple discount club. It is a long term commitment with upfront costs and ongoing annual dues that typically increase over time. Members book at their home resort 11 months in advance, and at other resorts at 7 months, subject to availability.

Note, you can book a Disney Vacation Club room with cash, but you will be paying much more for it.

If you are searching what is Disney Vacation Club because you are curious whether it fits your family’s travel style, the short answer is this: it tends to work best for families who plan to vacation at Disney properties consistently over many years and prefer villa accommodations with kitchens and living space.

For official details, always refer to Disney directly because policies, perks, and pricing can change quickly.

Our Rainy Day That Changed Everything

Our Disney Vacation Club story started on a literal rainy day. I was 11. My brother was 4. The parks were in full monsoon mode. My parents wandered into a presentation mostly to stay dry.

At the time, Disney Vacation Club was brand new (ish). Sales had only started in 1991, and the first property, Disney’s Old Key West Resort, had just opened. That resort was originally called The Disney Vacation Club Resort before being renamed.

My brother and I sat for hours (ugh). My parents listened. We did not have a lot of money. But they had a vision. They wanted future vacations locked in. They wanted consistency. They wanted someday grandkids walking into Disney villas.

And just like that, our family became owners at Old Key West. Note that this was also the best time to buy in as my parents paid around $12,000 for this resort at the time (at the starting point level). If we all had the hindsight back then, purchasing a ton of points at this rate would have been super smart! Where’s a time machine when you really need one?

Three Photo Spots You Cannot Skip at Old Key West

The pastel buildings reflecting off the water at sunset, palm trees swaying, that laid back Key West vibe that makes you forget you are minutes from a theme park.

The quiet pools tucked into the neighborhoods where afternoons stretch long and the only agenda item is, well….. swimming.

The spacious villa balconies at golden hour, coffee in hand, park bag packed, but no rush to leave. Except for us kids begging to head to Magic Kingdom fast.

From Park Commandos to Vacation Mode

Before Disney Vacation Club, we rope dropped, sprinted, maximized.

After Disney Vacation Club, we breathed.

I remember being 13 and literally sketching the 2 bedroom villa layout in my journal on the flight to Florida. I can still smell my dad cooking bacon and eggs in the full kitchen. Fresh fruit on the counter. Coffee brewing. That smell is a core memory.

We could not afford 2 bedroom or Grand Villas every year. But when we could, we soaked up every square foot. And that is when the shift happened. We stopped treating Walt Disney World Resort like a checklist and started treating it like a vacation.

Mornings at the pool. Breakfast at home. Half days in the parks. Back for swimming. That slower rhythm is what Disney Vacation Club gave us.

Where Our Points Took Us

After Old Key West, we were hooked. Over the years our family added more ownership, including Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Disney’s Riviera Resort.

Not every purchase was emotional. We grabbed Bay Lake Tower partly because of lower dues at the time. Real talk.

We have used Disney Vacation Club points for premium views at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows, family stays at the Riviera, easy bookings at Saratoga, Disneyland trips, and even Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, which remains one of our most unforgettable experiences.

Yes, you can also use points for Disney Cruise Line, but be prepared. It can require far more points than you expect and may even dip into future years.

Interval International exchanges are also available for certain getaways without using Vacation Points, depending on the offer.

Disney Vacation Club Benefits and Realities

When people search is Disney Vacation Club worth it, they are usually asking about math. We are focusing on experience here, but let’s be honest about the realities.

Disney Vacation Club Membership Gift

Now the down side.

Annual dues increase. Booking at 7 months can be competitive. Even at 11 months, popular room categories disappear quickly. If you see availability, grab it.

Service also feels different today. Thirty one years ago, Disney Vacation Club felt intimate. Now it is massive. The experience is still solid, but not as personal as those early days.

The One That Always Gets Away

One of our favorite resorts is Disney’s Beach Club Villas. We did not purchase there because of cost. Likely that legendary pool plays a role.

We book at 7 months and rarely get it immediately. Our strategy? Check daily. Join the waitlist. About 75 percent of the time we eventually land it. Never guaranteed. Always worth trying.

So Is Disney Vacation Club Worth It?

That depends on your travel habits, your finances, and how often you plan to visit vacation club walt disney world resort properties over decades.

For us, Disney Vacation Club transformed Disney from high speed park touring to generational memory making. It gave us kitchens, space, slower mornings, and a reason to return year after year.

It is not for everyone. It is a long term commitment. But for our family, it shaped 31 years of vacations.
